The Western & Atlantic depot at Cartersville was built in 1854. Once captured, the Western & Atlantic became General Sherman’s main supply line. Though remodeled and modified several times, the depot still incorporates some of the original brick walls. The most notable alteration, adding the present high roofline, which was deemed by many as too modern, came in 1902 at the same time the courthouse was being built. The simultaneous emergence of the depot and courthouse were dramatically noted by The Cartersville News & Courant on April 24, 1902 with two headlines: “The Ceremonies for Today, Laying of Corner Stone for New Courthouse” and “Dirt Broken for New Depot.”
